Freshman Academy

Overview

Jackson Public Schools-ACADEMIES OF JACKSON-developing extraordinary scholars

Academy Model

The model is focused on Small Learning Communities centered on scholar advocacy and wraparound services designed to promote optimum success in the ninth grade. Research supports the fact that scholars who are successful during their ninth-grade year are much more likely to graduate than scholars who are unsuccessful. A clear program of study based on RIGOR, RELEVANCE, and RELATIONSHIP will serve as the catalyst for a strong foundation in high school, therefore increasing the likelihood that scholars will graduate.

Academy Structure

Scholars will be assigned to cohorts of no more than 150 scholars. These cohorts of scholars will share six teachers who will work exclusively with that team of scholars. Teachers will have specific knowledge of scholars' needs and thereby be able to take a team approach to better support these learners. All of this will occur utilizing the school within a school environment separate from the remainder of the student body. This structure will allow for a much-needed nurturing environment designed to assist scholars in their transition from middle school to high school.
